Matthew chapter 1 begins with a genealogy that traces the lineage of Jesus Christ from Abraham to Joseph. This genealogy highlights the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies by establishing Jesus’ royal and messianic lineage through David and Abraham. The genealogy is divided into three sets of 14 generations.

The chapter then shifts to the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. Mary is found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, a righteous man, initially plans to divorce her quietly. An angel appears in a dream, telling him not to fear—the child is from the Holy Spirit. Name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins, fulfilling the prophecy of Emmanuel—“God with us.” Joseph obeys.
