"In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son..." — Hebrews 1, verses 1 and 2.
If God truly wants us to know Him, how does the infinite, invisible, eternal God make Himself known to finite human beings? The Bible is clear — God has always been in the business of revealing Himself.
I. Through Creation
"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." —Psalm 19:1. "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen..." —Romans 1:20. Creation reveals that there is a God who is intelligent, powerful, and good. But while creation can demonstrate that God exists, it cannot fully reveal who He is or how we can know Him personally.
II. Through Scripture
The Bible is God's self-revelation to humanity. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness..." —2 Timothy 3:16. Through Scripture we learn God's character, plans, promises, and salvation.
III. Through Jesus Christ
The clearest and most personal way God has revealed Himself is through Jesus Christ. "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." —John 1:14. "Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father." —John 14:9. Jesus is God in the flesh. He healed the sick, forgave sin, and endured the cross—showing God's mercy, grace, love, and justice. "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being..." —Hebrews 1:3. If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus!
IV. Through His Spirit
Through His Spirit, God continues to reveal Himself personally to each believer. "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth..." —John 16:13. His Spirit convicts of sin, teaches truth, guides decisions, and assures us of God's love.
V. Through People and History
God often uses other people to reveal Himself—through the lives of those who follow Him. "You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others..." —Matthew 5:14, 16.
An Invitation to Seek
God is not silent. He speaks through creation, The Scriptures, Christ, His Spirit, and His people. The question is not whether God reveals Himself. The question is: Are you listening? "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." —Jeremiah 29:13
If you want to know God more, ask Him to reveal Himself. Read His Word. Look at Jesus. Yield to His Spirit. Surround yourself with people who genuinely love Him. He promises you will find Him—not because you've earned it, but because He wants to be found.
