In this article, I'd like to address five essential topics that will help you grow and mature in your journey with Christ:
- Knowledge β acquiring facts, information, and truth through reading, study, observation, and/or experience.
- Understanding β grasping the meaning and connections behind individual pieces of knowledge.
- Insight β perceiving the deeper nature or implications of what one understands.
- Wisdom β applying knowledge, understanding, and insight in a way that is good, honorable, and beneficial.
- Foolishness β making choices based on selfishness, pride, or ignorance, often with no regard for consequences.
Natural progression: Knowledge is what you know β Understanding is why it matters β Insight is how it connects to people and life β Wisdom is what you do with it β Foolishness is a breakdown at any stage.
Analogy: Knowledge is having the tools; understanding is knowing how to use them; insight is knowing when and why; wisdom is building something good with them; foolishness is refusing to use the tools because of pride, laziness, or simply not feeling like it.
Examples
Spiritual: Memorize John 3:16 (knowledge) β realize it's about God's sacrificial love (understanding) β see how this love calls you to love others (insight) β start forgiving, loving, and mentoring (wisdom).
Financial: Learn that debt carries interest (knowledge) β realize impulsive spending leads to bondage (understanding) β recognize emotions drive spending (insight) β build a budget and avoid unnecessary debt (wisdom).
Fitness: Learn your body is a temple (knowledge) β see that neglecting health dishonors God (understanding) β identify unhealthy habits (insight) β commit to nutrition, rest, and exercise (wisdom).
Relationships: Learn husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church (knowledge) β grasp that love means devotion and self-sacrifice (understanding) β realize self-centered tendencies (insight) β start serving, listening, and valuing (wisdom).
Foolishness is knowing and understanding all of these thingsβyet refusing to do any of them.
One of my first prayers years ago was: "Lord, one day I want to be knowledgeable, wise, and insightful like Solomon and Stephen. Help me!" At that point in time in my life, I hated to read. But with one sincere prayer, that all changedβin 24 hours. I am thankful for that change, and I encourage you to pursue the same.
