CURIOUS NON-BELIEVERS

A Study Of God, Part 2

How God Reveals Himself

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…”

Hebrews 1:1–2

Introduction

If God truly wants us to know Him, the natural question becomes: How? How does the infinite, invisible, eternal God make Himself known to finite human beings? Thankfully, the Bible is clear—God has always been in the business of revealing Himself.

This article examines the primary ways God has chosen to reveal Himself, so that we can walk with Him, trust Him, and love Him with understanding.

I. THROUGH CREATION: THE WITNESS OF THE WORLD

God’s first and most universal form of revelation is through creation. The natural world displays His power, creativity, beauty, and divine nature.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

Psalm 19:1

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made…”

Romans 1:20

Creation reveals that there is a God who is intelligent, powerful, and good. The vastness of space, the intricacy of a flower, the rhythm of the seasons—all are signs pointing to the Creator.

But while creation can demonstrate that God exists, it cannot reveal who He is or how we can know Him personally. For that, we need something more. Does that make sense? Let’s move on…

II. THROUGH SCRIPTURE: THE WITNESS OF HIS WORD

The Bible is not just a religious book—it is God’s self-revelation to humanity. Through its pages, God speaks clearly, consistently, and authoritatively.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…”

2 Timothy 3:16

“Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

Psalm 119:105

The Scriptures reveals:

Through Scripture, we learn not only about God’s holiness, justice, and mercy—but also about our own condition (as sinners) and our need for redemption. God’s Word is His chosen means of revealing His will and drawing us into a relationship with Him.

III. THROUGH JESUS CHRIST: THE FULLNESS OF GOD REVEALED

The clearest and most personal way God has revealed Himself is through Jesus Christ.

“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory…”

John 1:14

“Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

John 14:9

Jesus is not just a messenger from God—He is God in the flesh. In Jesus, the invisible God becomes visible. He shows us what God is like in His compassion, power, purity, and love.

Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God. As Hebrews 1:3 says:

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being…”

If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus!

IV. THROUGH HIS SPIRIT: GOD’S ONGOING VOICE

God’s revelation didn’t end when Jesus ascended or when the last book of the Bible was written. Through His Spirit (what many call “the Holy Spirit”), God continues to reveal Himself personally to each believer.

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth…”

John 16:13

His Spirit:

As you begin to grow in your walk with God, His Spirit will help you understand the Scriptures and apply them to your life. He will also bring to mind the words of Jesus, comfort you in times of trial, and give you strength to follow God daily.

V. THROUGH PEOPLE AND HISTORY: GOD AT WORK IN COMMUNITY

God often uses other people to reveal Himself—through the lives of those who follow Him, teach His Word, or serve in His name.

“You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:14, 16

Throughout church history, God’s faithfulness and work was evident in the lives of countless individuals—martyrs, missionaries, mentors, family members, pastors, and friends.

Even today, He may use your community, a small group, or a church family to reflect aspects of His character to you. He also desires to one day use you to help others see who He is.

Conclusion: An Invitation to Seek

God is not silent. He speaks through creation, The Scriptures, Christ, His Spirit, and His people. The question is not whether God reveals Himself. The question is: Are you listening?

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Jeremiah 29:13

If you want to know God more, ask Him to reveal Himself. Read His Word. Look at Jesus. Yield to His Spirit. And make the effort to surround yourself with people who genuinely love and adore Him—not just those who say they are “Christian” or attend church.

He promises you will find Him—not because you’ve earned it, but because He wants to be found.
